I shook the man I willed myself not to care about even as I realized I did care whether he lived or died, and it went beyond the fact that he was our ticket off this planet. âAletox,â I said, even though Iâd said it a dozen times already. There was still no response.
âWhat about using the healing wand some more?â Ilara asked. âWill that help at all?â
âNo. The healing wand isnât capable of faithum. It canât do anything more to help than it already has, not at this point.â
âHas he lost too much blood?â
âProbably.â
Kai brought his flame near the missing hunk of flesh in Aletoxâs thigh. âOh, that looks really bad. It looks nasty.â
Ilara said, âAnd maybe beginning to get infected on top of it all.â She stared off into the direction in which we were heading. âIf we donât get him to a hospital soon, he might die.â
âHe looks half dead already.â No one disputed Kaiâs assessment.
If we hadnât arrived at a settlement by sunrise, heâd die. If the infection had taken hold too strongly by then, heâd die. If heâd lost too much blood, heâd die. There was a theme to my thoughts, and they all ended up with him dying.
âWe have to move now,â I said. âLila, can you do it? Heâll die for sure if we donât.â
âYeah, yeah,â she said, and struggled to get up. âI still might die out here too, from this fucking viper bite, so I have no desire to sit around and eat up time we donât have to waste.â
I helped her up. She tried putting weight on her bitten leg. âItâs not too bad, I can manage,â she said.
I slung her arm around my uninjured shoulder, and we limped over to Aletox. âWeâre going to have to carry him,â I said.
âAye,â Dolpheus said.
âAnd how on Earth are we going to do that?â Ilara asked, the only one potentially from Earth. âYou can barely walk yourself, I donât even know how youâre helping her. Kaiâs bicep is split wide open. Aletox looks like he weighs two hundred pounds, and he must be at least six foot four. I might be strong for a chick, but thereâs no way Iâll be able to pull his dead weight. Which leaves Dolpheus, who blessedly is in one fine piece, but he canât carry Aletoxâs weight across a desert when weâre all literally dying of thirst. He wonât make it.â
âNone of us are going to make it if we donât keep doing whatever we can to get the fuck out of here,â Dolpheus said. âI can carry him, but youâre right, itâll be tough to do it for long with how beat I am. If we can get one of his arms across your shoulder and the other across mine, we can lean him into me, but that way youâll be taking at least some of the weight.â
âLet me do that,â Kai said. âMy armâs messed up, but the rest of me isnât. Well, at least no more than any of the rest of you.
